PV's White, Walmach advance

HELLERTOWN Aggressiveness may be looked at as a somewhat negative quality in the game of life.

However, in the world of sports, there may not be a better attribute for an athlete to have. On Thursday, the Pleasant Valley duo of Jon White and John Walmach showed no mercy, cruising through the first two rounds of the District 11 Class AAA Doubles Tennis Championships. The team of White and Walmach have been playing doubles together for the last two years and their experience was evident early on.In the pair's first round match-up they faced off against fellow Mountain Valley Conference opponents in East Stroudsburg South's Aki Mollentheil and Patrick Dykiert. The Crusaders gave White and Walmach their best game of the day with the PV tandem winning 6-2. After settling in, White and Walmach then to took the second set 6-0."We did well serving wise and we played real aggressive, which is key if you want to be successful in these doubles tournaments," said White. "The conditions were also a lot more ideal to play in than last week at this time, which always makes things a little easier."White's partner, John Walmach also agreed that aggressive play is the key for them to keep advancing."Our game plan is to get to the net and to play as aggressive as possible," said Walmach. "We need to keep that type of energy throughout every match we play and put the pressure on the opposing team as much as we possibly can."In their second match of the day, the two faced off with another familiar MVC duo in Stroudsburg's Will Lynch and Brian Smith. White and Walmach hit their stride in the second round, needing just a little under 30 minutes to dispatch the two Mounties, winning 6-0, 6-1."We have high expectation for ourselves, we suffered a tough loss in the quarterfinals last year and our goal was to get back there and rectify that loss," said White. "We just have to stay aggressive, stay solid, and back each other up an we'll be alright for tomorrow."Walmach believes that this time around, it's a much different game than a year ago."We're very different players and much better players than we were a year ago," said Walmach. "With that being said, a lot of the other guys have gotten better as well. We just need to come in tomorrow and play with the same type of confidence that we had today."Watching the two perform on Thursday, it's easy to see why they earned the No. 2 seed in the District 11 AAA bracket. Something that Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Allison believes just comes with playing together so much."These guys have played a lot of doubles together over the the last couple seasons, so they know each other very well," said Allison. "They have great chemistry out there and they're both pretty aggressive players as well. They were charging the net today and that's what we encourage them do. It puts pressure on your opponent and forces them to make mistakes. They're playing really well right now."Two other Pleasant Valley doubles teams were in competition on Thursday, but were both eliminated in the first round. The team of Brandon Percey and Erik Ammerman were defeated by Shane Reider and Tyler Learn if Bangor. The team of Eric Galante and Kevin Bantle were defeated by Ben Tauber and Calvin Carpenter from Nazareth. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held at Saucon Valley High School today with play stating at 11 a.m.
