Charges in baby's death

The death of a 6-week- old boy on Feb. 5 in Tamaqua has resulted in charges being filed against his parents.

The baby, Bronx Kuhla, was found unresponsive in his home at 307 Arlington St., Tamaqua, at 2:30 a.m. and later pronounced dead at St. Luke's Miners Hospital in Coaldale.Cpl. Henry Woods conducted an investigation into the death and determined the child's parents had placed the baby in their bed, along with several other small children, despite being warned of the dangers concerning the risk of accidental suffocation in such situations when the child was born.Joseph Kuhla, 22, and Alyssa Shellhammer, 23, the parents, will have preliminary hearings before District Judge Stephen Bayer on four counts each of endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment.According to court papers filed by Cpl. Woods, officers and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the home and attempted to revive the child, who was unresponsive and not breathing. Their efforts failed and the baby was declared dead.Neither parent accompanied the infant to the hospital, and when an emergency room doctor called their home to ask Shellhammer to come to the hospital, she initially demurred, due to the other children and the lack of a vehicle. Police eventually transported her to the hospital. In the first interviews conducted by Woods, Shellhammer claimed Bronx was sleeping in a Pack and Play and she discovered him not breathing when Kuhla woke up to use the bathroom.Kuhla corroborated that account, at first. He later told investigators the couple had placed the baby in bed with them and their three other children. When one of the children awoke, crying, they discovered the unresponsive infant and called 911.The preliminary hearings are scheduled for May 6.
