Property taxes and our legislators

Dear Editor,

As another election is upon us, we hear the same story again about property tax reform from the candidates running for office or re-election.Time goes by, and nothing happens; all we get is higher and higher property tax bills. The number one topic at various town hall meetings is property taxes. People are just fed up with taxes. Gov. Tom Corbett states in his latest TV ad he has not raised taxes but has reduced taxes. I would like to know whose because it is not mine. With his reductions to education, our school districts have been forced to raise property taxes. To me this is a tax increase, not a tax reduction. I am a senior citizen on Social Security and a fixed income. The small increase we get every year is stripped away by the school districts increasing our property taxes. In the past 5 years I have seen my taxes increased approximately 25 percent.Property taxes are an archaic way to pay for our schools. State Sen. Dave Argall has said that we must drive a stake through its heart and kill it once and for all. Never to return. Here in Carbon County we are very fortunate to have two good state senators in Argall and John Yudichak. Both are supporters of SB76. Take a moment to thank them for all their efforts. The constitution of Pennsylvania states in article III, legislation, public school system: section 14. The General Assembly shall provide for the maintenance and support of a thorough and efficient system of public education to serve the needs of the Commonwealth. So why are property owners paying most of the money?George WhiteTowamensing TownshipPalmerton Area School District
