A True Warrior

Our world is made up of all types of warriors.

Take a moment to look around, as chances are you could be in the presence of one right at this very moment.According to dictionary.com, a warrior is defined as a person engaged or experienced in warfare, such as a soldier. However, an individual doesn't necessarily have to fight in a war to be considered a warrior. For the purposes of this column, I'd like to focus on the second meaning of the word as listed on the aforementioned website. That defines a warrior as a person who shows, or has shown, great vigor, courage or aggressiveness.Hospitalized March 26, my mother-in-law has displayed a tremendous amount of vigor and courage as she's dealt with several setbacks to her health.Originally, she was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, an irregular and often rapid heart rate that results in poor blood flow to the body.More commonly referred to as AFib, one of the main symptoms associated with it is fatigue, or lack of energy.Which explains precisely why she was routinely tired and void of her usual pep in the time leading up to her hospitalization. If that wasn't enough, it was discovered a short while later that she had pneumonia as well.At that point, she was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, where she spent more than a week.Once her bout with pneumonia had subsided, it was back to an area hospital for rehab.Through it all, she has continued to fight the good fight with the same bravado and tenacity that she's come to be known by.I've often marveled at her independent nature and spunk, which I believe have contributed to the relatively healthy life she's led over the years that I've known her.In fact, it wasn't uncommon to see her painting rocks or railroad ties outside in the yard; keeping up with her garden, or whipping up one of her well-cooked meals.Along those lines, I fondly remember sitting down at the "big kitchen" to chow down on some of her favorite dishes, such as pigs in a cornfield, potato soup, pork chop bake and firemen's chili, to name a few.Not to mention the times that the three of us would go for our monthly store order. How she was able to keep up with us during those marathonlike shopping sprees, I'll never know.As I write this, my mother-in-law was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital to her home in a secluded area in the Poconos.Once she's back in her home environment, here's hoping that she can continue to enjoy all the wonderful things life has to offer. In the meantime, your family and friends would like to wish you well in your continued recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
