PV's White, Walmach advance
HELLERTOWN - Pleasant Valley was the lone school represented in the TIMES NEWS area on Monday at the District 11 AAA Singles Tennis Tournament and the Bears didn't disappoint.
Both Jon White and John Walmach advanced to the quarterfinals, which will be played at Parkland High School on Friday.White, who was the No. three seeded player in the AAA bracket had a tough first round draw, matching up with Emmaus' Rowan Hobson. It took White a little while to get going, but once he found his stroke in the tough windy conditions, he was able to hold off Hobson 7-5, 6-2."I've known Rowan (Hobson) for awhile now, he's a real good player, so I knew I had to bring it in the first round," said White. "It took me a little time to get used to the wind out there, but after the first set I settled down and was able to play my game. Anything can happen when you're playing outside, you just have to battle through it."Walmach played a fellow Mountain Valley Conference opponent in Pocono Mountain West's Isaiah Torres. It also took Walmach the first set to get warmed up, defeating Torres 7-6, 6-0."I definitely went into that first set too tight, I wasn't really playing my game," said Walmach. "In the second set, I was a lot more focused and it showed. It was important for me to get that first set win too, that loosened me up, and gave me the confidence play better tennis."In the second round, White then took on Northampton's Tyler Nicholas. This time around, it was obvious that White was focused, taking care of Nicholas 6-0, 6-4."My goal is to advance a round further than I did last year," said White. "Last year I made it to the quarterfinals, so this year I would like to advance to the semifinals and I'm pretty confident that I can do that. I worked really hard in the offseason. I played a lot more tennis than I did in the past and I also did a lot more offseason conditioning. It's just key for me to not take anything for granted. I made some errors today that I can't make on Friday, I just have to play a little more consistent."The buzz around the tournament on Wednesday was that if anybody could knock off a seeded player that guy would be Walmach. That turned out to be exactly the case as Walmach took down seventh seeded Daniel Lynn from Liberty in the second round. Walmach upset Lynn, winning 6-3, 7-6."I went up early in that first set, which gave me a lot of confidence to finish the job in the second," said Walmach. "The second was a little tighter than I would've like it to be, but I was able to come out on top. It feels good to be in this position and I'm just going to go out there, have fun, and play relaxed. With White and Walmach advancing to the quarterfinals, it marks the first time ever that two Pleasant Valley singles players have advanced to the quarterfinals."Generally the big tennis schools, like the Parkland and Emmaus' are the only schools that get two guys into the quarterfinals, so that says a lot about our kids," said Pleasant Valley coach Mark Allison. "For us to do that is a real great accomplishment, not only for our school, but for our league as well. Also, the fact that John (Walmach), who was unseeded took down a seeded player was fantastic for our program."Stevie Berry was also in competition on Wednesday for Pleasant Valley. Berry was eliminated in the first round by the No. five seed in Stroudsburg's Brady Wyant.White will now go onto play sixth seeded Ben Tauber from Nazareth, while Walmach will match-up with the No. 2 seed from Emmaus in Matt FitzMaurice. Those matches will be played at Parkland High School on Friday at 1 p.m.
