NW's Paiste breezes into quarterfinals

OREFIELD - On a cold and blustery day at Parkland High School, Henry Paiste spent very little time in the elements.

The three-time defending District 11 Class AA tennis champion opened his bid for a four-peat in impressive fashion.Paiste breezed to a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories on the opening day of the district tournament, spending barely 30 minutes on the court in each match."After having some really nice days to play outside recently, today's weather obviously wasn't the best," said Paiste. "The wind was definitely a factor and it took a couple of games for me to adjust to it."But once I hit a few balls and got used to it, I didn't have any problems."Paiste might have been talking about the wind, but he could have easily been referring to his matches in general. The top-seed from the Northwestern School District dominated both Palisades' Nate Newburg and Saucon Valley's Mchael Vidal, losing very few points in either match."I was focused on playing one point at a time and one match at a time," said Paiste. "If you come into a tournament thinking about defending your championship, that's when you get in trouble."You can't get caught looking too far ahead. The only thing I'm thinking about right now is my quarterfinal match on Friday at 1 p.m."In that match, Paiste will take on unseeded David Mason of Saucon Valley, an upset winner over No. 8 seed Chris Ott of Wilson."My plan coming into this week was to really enjoy my last district tournament," said Paiste. "The four years have gone by so quickly."I remember coming in as a freshman when no one knew who I was and now I'm a senior. During the next few days, I just want to take everything in, play my best, and appreciate the opportunity I have in front of me."While Paiste was trying to enjoy his last District 11 Singles Tournament, three other TIMES NEWS are players were participating in their first district singles tournament.Lehighton's Tegan Durishin, Palmerton's Rich Roselli and Jim Thorpe's Matt Miller all failed to advance to day two of the tourney.Durishin played a strong opening match to beat Bethlehem Catholic's Niko Franekic, 6-3, 6-1. He was then eliminated by No. 7 seed Ben Heydt of Salisbury in round two, 6-2, 6-4."Tegan is only a sophomore who really hasn't played a lot of tennis," said Lehighton coach Dave Sherry. "He needs to develop a little more well-rounded game and be a little more consistent, but I'm really happy with how he played today."Tegan had a very good first match, and even though he lost the second match, I thought it was extremely competitive. He showed that there wasn't a whole lot of difference between him and the seventh seeded player."Sherry wasn't the only coach to take something positive away from a loss. Both Palmerton coach Alex Knoll and Jim Thorpe assistant coach Janet Farra were pleased with what they saw from their players. The Bombers' Roselli, a junior who missed several matches earlier this season with a back injury, dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Allentown Central Catholic's Trevor Grigoruk."Rich played really well today," said Knoll. "This should give him a lot of confidence heading into next season. Today's match could have gone either way."Rich was close to sending it to a deciding set, but just couldn't close it out when he was ahead, 5-4, in the second set. But it was still a very strong performance by him. I liked how he battled. He just came up a little short."Jim Thorpe's Miller, also a junior, dropped his match 6-1, 6-0 to Pierce Biasi of Pen Argyl."I saw some really nice things from Matt," said Farra. "He probably wouldn't agree with me right now, but he played a tough opponent."Matt was playing No. 2 doubles last season, so to step up to No. 1 singles and play in the district tournament is quite a jump. This was a good experience for him and will only help to make him a better player in the future."
