Terwilliger steps down

Jim Terwilliger was named the Pleasant Valley head football coach in 2009 and since then, Bear faithful have seen much success.

He is widely regarded as the best quarterback to ever graduate from East Stroudsburg University. He was also honored by receiving the 2005 Harlon Hill Trophy, which is the equivalent of the Hesiman Trophy in the FBS. Terwilliger then spent two years as an assistant at East Stroudsburg South before taking the big step in becoming the Bears head coach. However, with the decline in students at the Brodheadsville based school, Terwilliger learned on Tuesday that he will be one of the physical education faculty members laid off at the end of this school year. With the school's move, Terwilliger has decided to step down from his position as the leader of the Bears football program. In his five-year tenure, Terwilliger never had a losing season, compiling a 33-21 overall record. He also led the Bears to the District 11 AAAA playoffs in three out of his five seasons. Before Terwilliger arrived, the Bears had not made the District 11 playoffs since 2000.The entire situation is difficult for everyone involved, but Terwilliger understands the circumstances."I have a good understanding of what Pleasant Valley has done over the years in order to try and save teacher's jobs, it's just an unfortunate situation," said Terwilliger. "I'm one of 16 people whose life is now changed and you have to keep that into perspective. At the end of the day, this was a decision I had to make because teaching is my profession and coaching is my passion. It's hard to put everything into coaching that you want to, if you don't have something to pay the bills."Although, it was a decision that had to be made for the good of his family, Terwilliger was adamant that so far, it was the toughest decision he has to make in his life."I think this is the toughest decision I've ever had to make," said Terwilliger. "PV is such a special place. We have created a strong presence here in "Bear Nation" and "Bear Country." I also wanted to make a decision as swiftly as possible because I know the process in finding a head coach takes time. I want PV to find the next great guy to come in here and continue what we've built. This is a great bunch of kids and a great community, so there is plenty here to work with."So, what is next for Terwilliger? Obviously, that is up in the air at the moment, but don't expect to see him away from the game of football for very long."I don't think I'm qualified to do anything better than to coach football and teach them the right way to play the game," said Terwilliger. "I hope as this door closes another one opens for me. I just really want to thank the Pleasant Valley family for all the opportunities that they've given me. I'm all about relationships and I've created many that will last a lifetime."
