Man charged in fatal crash on turnpike

A trip by a Philadelphia man and two friends, who were going to attend homecoming weekend at Bloomsburg University, turned deadly when they were involved in a fiery crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last October.

Aenri Collase Dunlap, 19, who was driving the car with a learner's permit, is facing multiple charges in the death of front seat passenger Isaiah Lawler, 18. Lawler had a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.Kevin Boston, a back seat passenger who also had a learner's permit, was not injured.Police say Dunlap was traveling between 90 and 96 mph through the tunnel and about 76 mph when the crash happened in the Bowmanstown area, just outside the Lehigh Tunnel on Oct. 12.A hearing for Dunlap was held Wednesday before District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford.State police Trooper Joseph Splendido and several witnesses were present for the hearing, including occupants of a second vehicle that police say Dunlap's car struck.Police said Dunlap got his learner's permit on Aug. 10, two months before the crash.According to the affidavit, the 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by Dunlap, went down an embankment of the turnpike and was engulfed in flames when Splendido arrived at the scene.Dunlap told police he didn't remember striking another vehicle.However, the affidavit says Dunlap's car struck a Honda Accord, which rotated about 360 degrees counterclockwise over a distance of 243 feet. The driver of the Honda wasn't identified in the affidavit.Kosciolek ordered all charges bound for Carbon County Court, and that bail be continued at $50,000, unsecured.Dunlap has been charged with homicide by vehicle, accident involving death/injury not properly licensed, involuntary manslaughter, learner accompanied at least 18/21 years old, and four other summary offenses.
