Summit Hill has three inductees

The annual Carbon County Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Sunday, May 25 at Memorial Hall in Jim Thorpe.

Wadyak played three years of varsity football as a halfback and defensive back.He was co-captain of the football team in his senior year, when he was selected to play in the Schuylkill All-Star Game in which he scored a touchdown. Wadyak also earned Honorable Mention honors in the Eastern Conference.Wadyak's athletic prowess wasn't limited to just the football field, as he was also a member of the Summit Hill track team in 1953-54 as a sprinter. He medaled in the hurdles and was a member of the 1600-meter relay team that placed second at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The track team of 1953-54 won the Carbon County Track and Field championship as well as the Distict-11 title.After graduating from Summit Hill, Wadyak received a full scholarship to attend George Washington University. Unfortunately, he suffered a shoulder injury during his redshirt sophomore season, which ended his college career.In addition to attending George Washington, Wadyak also went to Hunter College in New York.Wadyak later joined the military, and was eventually able to play for the Army team of Fort Dix.Following his stint in the service, Wadyak was hired by Coats and Clerks, an international garment company located in New York City. He later took a job with the IBM Corporation, where he worked for 18 years, as a contract administrator for a company that was involved with the federal government.Wadyak is now retired and lives in Summit Hill.Cazzie KosciolekCazzie Kosciolek is a 1993 graduate of Panther Valley High School, where he would have to be considered one of the all-time greatest athletes to ever come out of the school.Kosciolek was a four-year letter winner in football, basketball, baseball and track.He was probably known for his accomplishments on the football field where he was a standout quarterback. Among the highlights of his gridiron career were leading the Panthers to three Eastern Conference playoff appearances, being named to the Pennsylvania All-State team following his senior season, being named the TIMES NEWS Football Player of the Year in 1992, and being named to the All-Anthracite team that season.In basketball, Kosciolek played forward for the Panthers. During the Spring sports season, he split his time between the baseball and track teams. He was an outfielder and outstanding hitter for the baseball squad and competed in the jumping events in track.Following graduation from Panther Valley, Kosciolek went to Division I-AA Boston University on a football scholarship. During his time at Boston U., Kosciolek was part of football teams that made the NCAA playoffs in both 1993 and 1994. In 1997, Kosciolek received a B.S. Degree in Journalism and Communication. With one year of football eligibility remaining, Kosciolek transferred to the University of New Haven. During his lone season at New Haven, Kosciolek was the starting quarterback, leading the team to the NCAA Division II championship game. Kosciolek was named first-team All-American following the season and finished third in the nation in the Harlon Hill voting the Division II equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.Kosciolek is a member of the New Haven Hall of Fame.Since graduation, Kosciolek has served as an assistant college football coach at several schools, including New Haven, Newberry College, Hofstra University and Holy Cross, where he is currently in his eighth year as a wide receiver and special teams coach.He is married to his wife Christy for 10 years. They have two sons, Owen and Max.Marlene BasiagoMarlene Basiago is a 1973 graduate of Panther Valley High School.During her high school years, the only girls sport that the school district sponsored was basketball.In the early stages of the girls basketball program, Basiago pioneered the sport at Panther Valley where she was an outstanding center on the varsity team for three years.Basiago was named the Tri-County League Most Valuable Player as a senior, leading the Panthers into the league championship game against Hazleton that season. Basiago was not only a standout offensive player, leading the Panthers in scoring, but also was the team's top rebounder and defender. Despite the fact that teams only averaged playing 15 games a year during that time period, Basiago is still ranked among the top 15 players on Panther Valley's all-time girls basketball scoring list.Following graduation from Panther Valley, Basiago attended Lehigh County Community College (Associate Degree in Occupational Therapy), Temple University (B.S. Degree in Occupational Therapy), and Thomas Jefferson University (B.S. Degree in Physical Therapy). While attending college, she was active in softball leagues in Philadelphia and Summit Hill.Following school, Basiago founded the Summit Hill Girls Softball Association and was president of the Panther Valley Public Library.Basiago owned and operated the Helping Hand Clinic, a physical and occupational therapy clinic in Summit Hill, for 24 years before recently retiring.
