Shaud tosses perfect game
High school athletes put a ton of hard work and dedication into their respective sports.
In Marian's Schuylkill League match with Weatherly, Bethany Shaud's hard work paid huge dividends as her perfect game helped Marian cruise to a 12-0 win.Marian scored two runs in the top of the first inning which may have gave Shaud a ton of confidence as she fanned two of the first three batters in the bottom of the inning."She's been pitching well all season," said Marian head coach Joe DeAngelo. "She toyed with no hitters and perfect games a few times so far this year and she finally got it today. Bethany has worked hard in the offseason and so far it's been paying off for her."The Fillies did the rest of their damage in the following two innings. Marian scored three runs in the second. In the big seven-run third inning, the Fillies loaded the bases twice and had some timely hitting. The big inning certainly helped take some pressure off of Shaud on the mound."I like the way we came out and swung the bats today," DeAngelo said. "We wanted to get on them early and not allow them to have any momentum."The Marian coach credited Alex Stroia and Gabby Cann in having productive games at the plate.Lindsay Nemeth who bats in the three hole and caught Shaud's perfect game for Marian also provided a lot of offense. Nemeth totaled a single, double, and two RBIs in the contest."The more experience you have, the better hitter you are and we have several experienced players in our lineup," said DeAngelo. The Fillies sure did look poised and experienced as they drew eight walks in the game that led to the timely hitting throughout the lineup.Despite the deceiving score, Weatherly's starting pitcher Kelly Parker pitched much better than the box score showed. Weatherly head coach Margaret Brown said Parker seems to be much more consistent and confident every time she takes the mound. The Lady Wreckers had a few mishaps in the field, which helped move runners around for the Fillies.Brown is also looking for her Weatherly offense to pick up pick up the pace as the season moves on."We really need to improve on the offensive end, we're simply not hitting," she said. "We haven't faced many pitchers and we haven't been outside too much which doesn't help us out either."As for Marian, Shaud had six strikeouts and her defense took care of the rest, as they were very efficient around the diamond."It's very early in the season and there are many challenges to be met along the way," said DeAngelo. "We're going to be playing just about every day and we're going to have to come prepared."Marian 237 00 - 12 8 0Weatherly 000 00 - 0 0 3Shaud and Nemeth; Parker, Polchin (3) and Maiello. W-Shaud.
