Housing authority receives grants

Carbon County Housing Authority was recently awarded $172,948 from the federal government.

The money is part of $8,879,813 that was distributed through the 2014 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Public and Indian Housing Capital program.Paula Fougeray, deputy director of the Carbon County Housing Authority, explained that because the authority is so small, the funds can be deposited into its operating fund and will be used throughout the year for routine maintenance of its buildings.Currently, the housing authority has a total of 153 units under the capital fund in Lansford, Lehighton, Jim Thorpe, Weatherly and Nesquehoning. In the past, the housing authority received larger allocations from the program, but funding cuts over the years has also cut the amount received.Other area authorities awarded funding through the HUD Public and Indian Housing Capital program include:• Schuylkill County Housing Authority, $716,291;• Northampton County Housing Authority, $93,301;• The Housing Authority of Monroe County, $362,476;• Easton Housing Authority, $740,504;• Housing Authority of the City of Pottsville, $581,718;• Housing Authority of the County of Luzerne, $1,450,235.
