County to hire 12 lifeguards

Carbon County is looking for students to fill lifeguard positions.

During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, Commissioner Wayne Nothstein, chairman, said that there are 12 lifeguard positions available at Mauch Chunk Lake this summer. The positions typically are filled by college students looking for summer jobs.He said the guards are needed from Memorial Day weekend, May 23, through the end of Labor Day, Sept. 1.Applicants must have lifeguard certifications, Red Cross training and be available to work weekends and holidays."We are trying to get as many kids in jobs as possible," he said.For more information on the positions, call the commissioners' office at 570-325-3611.In a related matter, Nothstein said that the county has received eight calls to fill the Children and Youth Advisory Board. There are currently four or five positions open.He said that if anyone is interested in serving on a board, they should call the commissioners' office to find out what is required for the spots.In other business, the board appointed the following individuals/organizations:• Carbon Engineering Inc. was reappointed as the county engineer for 2014 at the 2014 professional fee schedule.• Kevin Steber of Summit Hill was appointed to the position of duly-enrolled volunteer Emergency Management Agency deputy.• Dawn Benner of Lehighton, East Penn Fire Company, Mahoning Valley Ambulance and Blue Mountain Health System; as well as Scott Soden, Rapid Response Inc.; were appointed Group II (emergency services) for the Local Emergency Planning Committee.
