St. John Neumann students bring books to life

Creativity and boundless energy permeated from inside the halls of St. John Neumann Regional School on Thursday.

The annual Academic Fair held at the school's Palmerton campus tends to have that effect on students, who get to showcase their work before family and friends.Look at seventh-grader Jacob Martinez, for example.Jacob said he chose to do one of his book reports on how to create a newspaper, and used the design of an actual newspaper as his template. He focused one particular piece on his love of extreme running. His piece also included sports scores, a weather report, and other features typically found inside a newspaper. Also sports-minded in her approach was Jamison Wheeler, a fifth-grader from the Palmerton campus who did a book report on the Pittsburgh Penguins; more specifically, star National Hockey League player Mario Lemieux."I took pillow cloth, and stitched it together," Jamison said. "I also made the shoes and shirt."Ann Kester, an instructor at the school's Slatington campus, said the students were able to take lessons from multiple subjects and apply them to their projects."They worked really hard, and we are very proud of all they do," Kester said. "It's also time together for families."Pupils in grades K-3 attend the school's Slatington campus, while students in grades 4-8 attend its Palmerton campus. To arrange a personal tour of the school, call the Slatington campus at (610) 787-2935, or the Palmerton campus at (610) 826-2354.For more information, visit
