Tide ousts Lehighton

ORWIGSBURG - Lehighton head coach Rich Oertner knew it was going to be hard to duplicate Wednesday's performance against Tamaqua.

However, he also knew that's what it was going to take if his team had any shot of knocking off Pottsville.Unfortunately, after playing their best basketball of the season just 48 hours earlier, the Indians' hot shooting fizzled out against Pottsville, as the Crimson Tide rolled to a 69-33 District 11 Class AAA quarterfinal round victory last night at Blue Mountain."If we would have come out and played like we did on Wednesday, we might have had a chance, but we came out and missed a lot of shots early," stated Oertner. "Pottsville is a very good basketball team. They're extremely disciplined and they run their sets until they get a good shot."And Pottsville had plenty of "good shots" throughout the course of the game. After racing out to an early 8-2 lead, the Crimson Tide converted 10 straight field goals during an eight-minute span of the first and second quarters. By the time they missed their first shot of the second quarter, the Crimson Tide had already built a comfortable 32-11 lead with under three minutes remaining until halftime. After scoring a season-high 85 points against Tamaqua, Lehighton tied a season-low by scoring 33 points against a Pottsville team that prides itself on defense."Jordan Knappenberger and Tyler Crum are both great shooters, but I thought (Jordan) Melochick and (Travis) Blankenhorn did an outstanding job of shutting them down all night," stated Pottsville head coach Dave Mullaney. "I was pleased with the entire defensive effort tonight."After scoring 39 points against Tamaqua and averaging a team leading 14.1 points on the season, Knappenberg was held to just six points, while Crum (averaging 13.5 ppg) was limited to just two points.Leading 33-17 at halftime, Pottsville's Travis Blankenhorn began heating up. The junior (averaging 18.5 ppg) scored 10 of his team-high 20 points in the third quarter, as the Crimson Tide built a 25-point lead heading into the final eight minutes. While Lehighton shot just 30-percent (13-for-43) from the field for the entire game, Pottsville shot over 61-percent from the floor in every quarter and ended the night converting 26 of its 41 shots (63-percent).After being held scoreless for the entire first half, James Farano scored all 10 of Lehighton's third quarter points and accounted for 14 of the Indians' 16 second half points. In addition to his 16 points, Farano also pulled down seven rebounds."It was a really nice year for us as a whole, but Pottsville was just the better team tonight," added Oertner. "I don't know if anybody could have beat them the way they played tonight."Aside from Blankenhorn's 20 points, Eli Nablholz scored 16, while Jordan Melochick added 14 and nine rebounds.Pottsville outrebounded Lehighton 32-28, and forced the Indians (14-11) into 13 turnovers. With the win, second-seeded Pottsville (22-4) advances to Tuesday's District semifinal against third-seeded Blue Mountain (7 p.m. at Minersville). It is the fourth time the Eagles and Crimson Tide will meet this season, with Pottsville winning two of the previous three contests.LEHIGHTONRossino 3-0-1-8, Farano 6-2-6-14, Crum 1-0-0-2, Zwetolitz 0-0-0-0, Ortiz 0-0-0-0, Williams 0-0-0-0, McCandless 0-0-0-0, Cordova 0-0-0-0, K.
