Eight Bears advance to day two

Pleasant Valley wrestling coach Justin Micklos was hoping to advance as many wrestlers as possible to the Northeast Regional 3A tournament next weekend.

But Micklos and the rest of the Bears' wrestling team needed to survive day one of the District 11 wrestling tournament first. The Bears advanced eight wrestlers to today's action at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium, but all of them will be competing in the consolation bracket. No Pleasant Valley wrestler advanced to the semifinals, as the Bears lost all three quarterfinal bouts they found themselves in.Anthony McCue (120), Jason Jacoby (126), Garrett Gouger (132), Codie Moeck (152), Brody Keefe (160) Trent Thomas (182), Matt Robinson (195) and Ahmed Curtis (HWT) kept their hopes alive by surviving day one.For Micklos, taking over the reigns at his first district tournament brought rough patches, but the head coach remained optimistic."We have a really young team and we knew it would be tough," Micklos said. "We want to send as many guys as possible to regionals. We just have to keep fighting. "McCue, Gouger and Keefe were the only Bears to reach the quarterfinals, but all fell victim to their opponents.McCue lost an 11-2 decision to Easton's Alex Montes, while Gouger was tech falled by East Stroudsburg South's Colby Ems 18-3 in 3:43. Keefe was the closest Bear to reach the semis, losing an 8-6 overtime decision to Liberty's Kevin Knox.Once the consolation round got underway, Jacoby got things off on the right foot for PV, pinning East Stroudsburg North's Justin Tripoli in 4:58.The PV sophomore was happy to get the win and hopes to see it continue in Saturday's consolation round."That pin was pretty big for me," Jacoby said. "I just wanted to get that win and keep moving forward. We're just trying to think positive. Kenny [Yanovich] has been a big help to me here. He's been going over things with me and hopefully I can get a medal and go to regionals."The Bears are without their star senior Kenny Yanovich, who injured his shoulder a couple weeks ago and was forced to watch from the sidelines Friday evening.Micklos didn't underestimate the loss of Yanovich from the competition, but put a positive spin on the situation."It does hurt and I feel bad for Kenny because he's a great kid," Micklos said. "But you have to move on from it. He's been a great leader to the kids and he's still a big part of our team."Wrestling begins at 9:30 am Saturday morning with the second round of consolations. Semifinals are slated for 10:30am, while the medal round beings at 5pm. Finals kickoff at 7:15pm with 3A and 2A championship bouts taking place on two mats.
