The Coaldale Police Department took a methamphetamine lab out of operation at 11 E. Ruddle St., Friday night.
Part-time officers were able to follow through on a tip Friday afternoon and had a search warrant in hand by 4:50 p.m. Within minutes of executing that warrant at the Ruddle Street address, it became apparent that methamphetamine was being produced in the half double home.Resident Jason Shiffert, 33, was arrested and the State Police Clandestine Lab Response Team was notified. Four hours later, the hazardous materials were neutralized and cataloged and Shiffert was on his way to an arraignment before Schuylkill County duty District Judge David Platchko.Coaldale Police Sgt. Keith Krapf and Criminal Investigator Todd Weiss provided control at the scene while Patrolman Joseph Krebs lodged the suspect in the Coaldale jail, a concentrated effort that wasn't possible two months ago.The PSP team methodically went through the home, from basement to attic, removing dozens and dozens of articles of contraband. Each was photographed and marked as evidence.Despite the return of cold temperatures, no one hurried, due to the constant threat of an explosion, fire or the release of toxic vapors and fluids. Shiffert was charged with manufacture of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of liquified ammonia gas with the intent to manufacture a controlled substance, possession of pseudoephedrine, lithium and ammonium nitrate with the intent to manufacture a controlled substance, operating a methamphetamine lab and possession of a controlled substance. He was lodged in the Schuylkill County Prison, Pottsville, in lieu of $50,000 straight bail. Sgt. Krapf noted there would be additional charges filed at a later date as the investigation will continue.
