Carbon Commissioners Ticket booth at county lot to be moved
Visitors using the Carbon County parking lot will have a small inconvenience over the next few years.
During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, the board said that the ticket booth at the entrance of the county lot, where people pay to park, will be moved next week to accommodate the construction equipment and supplies that will be coming in to complete the Route 903 bridge project.Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said that the county will be moving the booth soon.Gerhard organized a meeting with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation representatives, as well as other officials to see if the county could widen the entrance and leave the booth in its current location. It was determined that this was not an option because widening the entrance would require a highway occupancy permit. The booth will be placed on a temporary platform and moved to the right side of the entrance, causing visitors to have to lean over the passenger side of their vehicle to pay the toll.Commissioner William O'Gurek asked that people using the lot be patient because this is only a temporary inconvenience. The booth will be moved back to its normal location after the bridge project is completed in 2017.In other matters, the board accepted the proposal from Schindler Elevator Corporation of Allentown, for repairs on the main elevator in the courthouse. The cost for the repairs is $22,684.Commissioner Wayne Nothstein, chairman, said Schindler will begin as soon as possible.Gerhard noted that the parts needed need to be built to specification before the project begins.O'Gurek added that once Schindler is ready, the repairs will take six days. The repairs include replacing motors and installing a submersible 30-horsepower pump that will be submerged in oil."It's a big job," Nothstein said. "It will basically restore the elevator to like new condition."The elevator in the courthouse broke approximately two weeks ago and people scheduled to go before a judge are required to take the stairs to courtrooms one and two.In the event that a person cannot reach their destination in the building, the court staff has put a plan in place to accommodate the individual.Renovations on the train station are also moving along and the station will be open for Jim Thorpe's Winter Fest weekend on Feb. 15 and 16.
