A look at who will sign with Penn State
The eve before college football's National Signing Day can always be an exciting time for any college coach, player, or fan. In more recent years, the day has become quite the spectacle, with most major sports networks dedicating a whole day to National Signing Day coverage.
You've most likely all seen the typical signing day setup, where a player sits at a table with three or four hats of different colleges and then picks one, therefore making his decision. It's become a pretty important moment over the years for high school student athletes and it also makes for good T.V.With that being said, new Penn State head coach James Franklin has certainly been busy with recruiting. Franklin officially became the leader of the pride that is the Nittany Lions football program on January 11th and one of the first things the Langhorne, PA native addressed was recruiting. Franklin took an aggressive stance right from the start, stating that it was his goal and the goal of the PSU staff to dominate the state of Pennsylvania and the surrounding region."Our recruiting philosophy is that we are going to dominate the state," said Franklin in his introductory press conference. "We are going to dominate the state. We are going to dominate the region. That is going to be our plan, and I'm calling all the high school coaches. I'm calling all the people in the state that we need to come together like never before."Since that proclamation in early January Franklin has done a solid job of keeping the current class intact and adding a few more kids to the crop. All in all, Penn State currently has 20 verbal commitments and five that have already signed their letter of intent and are currently enrolled in classes. Franklin also took advantage of the relationships he built with some recruits while he was at Vanderbilt, flipping six players from their 2014 recruiting class.Rivals.com has Penn State currently ranked No. 20 in their list of team recruiting rankings (second only to Ohio State (No. 9) in the BIG 10), so let's now take a look at who could be suiting up for the blue and white next season.OFFENSEQuarterbackPenn State was able to nab another high quality signal caller with IMG Academy's Michael O'Connor. According to Rivals, O'Connor is the 7th ranked pro-style quarterback in the country and is ranked 184th overall in their list of the 250 top high school football players in the country. This was an important commit for Penn State as they currently have just one other scholarship QB on the roster in returning starter Christian Hackenberg.**** Michael O'Connor (6-5, 223), IMG Academy, Bradenton, FL*** Trace McSorley (6-0, 182), Briar Woods, Ashburn, VARunning backRunning back wasn't an absolute necessity this season for Penn State, with starters Zach Zwinak, Bill Belton, and back-up Akeel Lynch all returning. However, the Nittany Lions picked up three backs that are all very versatile. Don't be surprised to see some of these guys red-shirt this season.*** Nick Scott (5-11, 180) Fairfax, Fairfax, VA*** Johnathan Thomas (5-11, 215), St. John's Prep, Danvers, MA*** Mark Allen (5-7, 185), DeMatha, Hyattsville, MDTight endSimply put, the Nittany Lions are loaded at tight end and they've added another stud to the group in New Jersey native Mike Gesicki. Rivals has Gesicki as their 10th best TE prospect in the country, while 247sports has them as their No. 1 tight end. Gesicki will join Kyle Carter, Jesse James, and Adam Breneman, which any sports enthusiast could argue is the best tight end group in the country.**** Mike Gesicki (6-6, 215), Southern Regional, Manahawkin, NJWide receiverChristian Hackenberg has to be happy with what PSU has coming in at wide receiver this season. This could very well be the best recruiting class of wide receivers since Derrick Williams, Deon Butler, and Jordan Norwood, which was arguably their best ever. According to Rivals, Chris Godwin ranks the highest of this group, coming in as the 21st ranked wideout in the country, while Saeed Blacknall and DeAndre Thompkins are ranked 32nd and 40th. PA native Troy Apke is ranked 72nd.**** DeAndre Thompkins (5-11, 172), Swansboro, Swansboro, NC**** Saeed Blacknall (6-3, 205), Manalapan, Manalapan, NJ**** Chris Godwin (6-2, 202), Middletown, Middletown, DE*** Troy Apke (6-2, 175), Mt. Lebanon, Mt. Lebanon, PAOffensive lineThere might not be any five-star guys here for the Nittany Lions, but there is certainly a ton of size. Penn State's smallest lineman recruit this season is 6-6, which bodes well for a team that lost some experience up front. They certainly brought in a bunch with a lot of potential and the ole' coaching adage 'you can't teach size' certainly applies here.*** Chance Sorrell (6-6, 263), Middletown, Middletown, Ohio*** Brandon Brosnan (6-6, 274), Maine South, Park Ridge, IL*** Noah Beh (6-7, 245), Scranton Prep, Scranton, PA*** Chasz Wright (6-7, 300) Milford Academy, New Berlin, NYDEFENSEDefensive lineRecruit Lloyd Tubman seems to be really the only current commit that is on the fence heading into signing day. Tubman, junior college transfer Tarow Barney, and Antoine White all have a chance to see time this year with the departure of DaQuan Jones and Kyle Baublitz.*** Tarow Barney (6-3, 285), Northwest Mississippi C.C., Senatobia, MS*** Antoine White (6-2, 267) Millville, Millville, NJ*** Lloyd Tubman (6-3, 228), Seneca, Louisville, KYLinebackerThis is probably not the linebacker group most people expected, being that Penn State has produced so many dominant players at this position over the years. However, both Troy Reeder and Jason Cabinda are extremely athletic with Reeder already having great size, weighing in at 232 pounds, and measuring 6-3.*** Troy Reeder (6-3, 232), Salesianum School, Wilmington, DE*** Jason Cabinda (6-1, 220), Hunterdon Central, Flemington, NJDefensive backAlong with the wide receivers this group has the potential to be the deepest in Penn State's 2014 recruiting class. This group is littered with special athletes and it's no secret what Franklin is trying to do with the Penn State secondary. Three out of their five recruits in the defensive backfield are 6-1 and over meaning Franklin is trying to build a physical secondary, which is something Penn State has not had in a very long time.**** Koa Farmer (6-2, 207), Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks, CA*** Daquan Worley (5-10, 175), Coatesville, Coatesville, PA*** Grant Haley (5-10, 180), Lovett, Atlanta, GA*** Marcus Allen (6-1, 187), Wise, Upper Marlboro, MD*** Amani Oruwariye (6-1, 185) Gaither, Tampa Bay, FL*** Christian Campbell (6-1, 181) Central, Phenix, AL
