No. Lehigh falls to Becahi, Pine Grove
BETHLEHEM Entering the semifinal round of the District 11 Class AA team championships, Northern Lehigh coach Steve Hluschak knew the challenge awaiting his team was great.
The fourth-seeded Bulldogs entered with the unenviable task of facing three-time defending PIAA Champion and top-seed Bethlehem Catholic. And for the first time during the tournament, the Golden Hawks were able to show what they're capable of. Becahi won 13 of 14 bouts and earned bonus points in 10 matches en route to a 68-3 victory over the Bulldogs. The loss did not end the tournament for Northern Lehigh, though. The Bulldogs moved to the consolation semifinals against sixth-seed Pine Grove, which picked up a 45-26 win over Lehighton earlier in the day in the consolation quarterfinals, eliminating the Indians. In a contest that went back-and-forth from the outset, the Cardinals seized momentum late in the match to claim a 33-31 victory, eliminating the Bulldogs.SemifinalsBethlehem Cath.-No. LehighThe Golden Hawks won the first nine bouts, taking a commanding 56-0 lead and never letting Northern Lehigh catch its breath."(Wrestling against) Bethlehem Catholic is what it is," said Hluschak. "That was pretty much what I expected. They're going to beat everybody here pretty good."The Bulldogs got on the board in the 10th match of the contest, when CJ Young picked up a 9-7 decision victory over Mason Angstadt at 145 pounds. While there were no other victories for Northern Lehigh, the team still got solid performances from several wrestlers that pushed the nationally ranked Golden Hawks.Nate Farber lost a 2-0 decision at 160 pounds to Bethlehem Catholic's Adam Soldridge, while Austin Arnold lost a 3-1 decision to Jody Crouse and Ryan Farber fell to Steve Maloney 4-1.Consolation SemifinalsNo. Lehigh-Pine GrovePine Grove jumped out to an early 12-0 lead before Northern Lehigh answered with pins from Colton Rex (106) and Jacob Kistler (113) to tie the score 12-12.The Bulldogs took an 18-15 lead after Matt Schmall pinned Carson Rittenbaugh at 126 pounds. The teams alternated the next five matches, with Ryan Rubio (132), CJ Young (145) and Nate Farber (160) picking up wins to give Northern Lehigh a 31-24 lead with only two matches remaining.Trailing late in his match at 170 pounds, Pine Grove's Jesse Fisher mounted a comeback to claim a 6-4 decision win over Austin Arnold, which kept the Cardinals hopes alive heading into the final bout with a 31-27 deficit."That was a very big win at 170 pounds," Pine Grove coach Jack Drey said. "(Jesse) Fisher has been coming up with a lot of big matches all day today, and in this whole tournament, and that's a been a pleasant surprise for us."But there were also a lot of unsung guys in our lineup that didn't get pinned and wrestled tough to save us points in different situations. That was pretty much a team effort all the way through."After losing earlier in the day, Guy Zimmerman more than made up for it by picking up a pin over Theo Young that was worth six points and a trip to the consolation finals.Hluschak knows bonus points can either win or lose a match. This time, the Bulldogs were on the wrong end of the result because of them."That's what it comes down to. Everybody is good at this level," the coach said. "We lost the coin flip and they got the matches they wanted and we weren't able to do what we wanted to do."Consi QuarterfinalsLehighton-Pine GroveThe Indians came out strong in the opening bout, with Connor Frey picking up a 7-6 decision win over Guy Zimmerman, who entered the match with a 29-1 record and a win over Frey earlier this season."When they picked the weights, that was the weight I hoped they picked," Lehighton coach Dan Williams said of the matchups. "I was happy that Pine Grove sent its stud out there to get that rematch."Down here, that's what you want. It was a big win for him and it should be a confidence booster for him because he did the things offensively that I know he can do and he started the match out the way we wanted to."Pine Grove claimed the next three matches, two by fall and one via forfeit, to take an 18-3 lead. The Indians responded with three wins in the next four matches, as Ezra Neff (106), Antonio Lorenzo (113) and Tegan Durishin (126) cut the deficit to 21-16.But Lehighton gave up 12 points in the next two bouts on two consecutive forfeits, which pushed the Pine Grove advantage to 33-16 and proved to be too much for the Indians to overcome."We have a few guys that got injured and got sick and couldn't make it," Williams said. "That really hurt us, not being able to have those kids step up to the plate for today. But that's how it goes sometimes."Lehighton split the final four matches, with Anthony Farano (145) and Tyler Cann (160) earning convincing wins."Getting three matches (in the tournament) was nice and you get to see some of the competition you'll face in the individual district tournament, and that's really valuable," Williams said.CONSI QUARTERFINALSPine Grove 45, Lehighton 26106 - Ezra Neff (L) pinned James Gately in :12.113 - Antonio Lorenzo (L) maj. dec.
