Back to school in Penn-Kidder

The 725 students who attend Penn-Kidder Elementary School in Jim Thorpe returned to school after a blockage was thawed in pipes leading to the school. When temperatures dipped into single digits Tuesday and Wednesday, the water supply to the school was frozen. Pipes were frozen in the water tower, as well as the lines leading to the school. To unclog the pipe, the entire interior of the tank was warmed up to about 120 degrees. The pipes finally thawed at 8:30 Wednesday night. Today, school was open with a regular schedule. Students who attend the school, which houses kindergarten through eighth grade, will have to go one day longer this school year to make up for the day. Gail Maholick
