Schuylkill County will soon be playing a vital role in the federal penal system as construction is about to begin on a new $40 million federal penitentiary along I-81, five miles south of the borough of Frackville.

Pennsylvania will have two federal penitentiaries when the Schuylkill facility opens in two-and-half year.
