Board to hear request to demolish former Aquashicola Post Office building

The former Aquashicola Post Office could eventually be demolished, and a garage would be constructed in its place.

That's one of two requests the Lower Towamensing Township zoning hearing board is scheduled to hear on Thursday. At 8 p.m., Lee Costenbader, the owner of the former post office structure, at 4015 Forest Inn Road, Palmerton, will go before the zoners in search of a variance to erect a 50-by-28-foot accessory storage building, and to demolish a principal building.Millport, the town's original name, got its first post office in 1855. The Aquashicola post office was established May 10, 1962.A fire in March of 2002 caused extensive damage to the building which used to house the community's post office.Costenbader bought the property from former owner Duane Itterly in May of 2005.A new post office was opened at Little Gap and Mill Road in November of 1994.The former post office is in a C-1 (Mixed Commercial Residential) zoning district. A variance is required to allow an accessory building without a principal building.Township zoning officer Duane Dellecker sent a rejection letter Sept. 19, stating that the township's zoning ordinance requires an accessory building to be subordinate to a principal building, and a variance is needed to allow a wall of an accessory building to be 50-feet in length on a lot with less than three acres.Normally, an accessory building on a lot less than three acres should be 40 feet.Prior to that, at 7 p.m., Matthew Steinmetz will attempt to secure a special exception to modify his home occupation to conduct repairs out of a garage, and to use it for storage related to the activity.Steinmetz's property, at 425 Hahns Dairy Road, is located in an R-4 (Medium Density Residential) zoning district. A special exception is required to conduct a home occupation out of an accessory structure.
