I can not let this year go by without congratulating the Lehighton Woman's Club on their 100 year anniversary.This is such a huge accomplishment for an organization, but then again it is a club of women who have one singular mission and that is to take care of its community.The Woman's Club was originally called the Mother's Club in 1913. The club members worked with children on civic-minded projects, including birdhouses, contests, and stressed the importance of reading.There have been many past presidents who have served this club to their utmost, leading their members with fund raising, endeavors for the library, churches, hospitals, and schools.Our past president did not attend the 100th anniversary. I attended on behalf of Maureen Karas, who passed away this past February. I was touched by the kind words poured out regarding her and a moment of silence for her and the other past presidents.My mother loved being a member of his very special club and cherished her friendship with all the members including Lehighton's sister club, Nesquehoning. She was looking forward to attending this event, but in a way I do feel she was there.Michael Heery reported in his article about the anniversary dinner that the top song on the music chart in 1913 was "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." Well on June 5, Maureen Karas' Irish Eyes were smiling as she looked down from Heaven over all her Woman's Club members and dear friends.Linda Benner, past president, was among those friends. She spoke how Maureen took her under her wing when she first joined the club and served her term as president.This club is essential in our community. It has such a history of kind, resourceful, and giving hearts. These days, everyone is so busy and find it hard to add one more meeting or activity to their agenda.If anyone reading this letter is looking for something to do with their time, please look into joining this group.Who knows, you may meet a new friend, laugh a little, learn a new talent, or know you made a difference by being a member of a wonderful group of women.Karen AlboucqLehighton
