Slatington mayor retains seat; new mayor in Walnutport

Voters in the Northern Lehigh area elected mayors in Slatington and Walnutport, decided borough council races in those two towns, re-elected a Washington Township supervisor, and a contest was decided for seats on the Northern Lehigh School Board of Education in General Election balloting on Tuesday.

Mayor Walter Niedermeyer, of Slatington, was elected to another four-year term in a contested race, while Wayne Weidner won a four-year term to become Walnutport's new mayor in an uncontested race.Three incumbents were re-elected to serve on Slatington Borough Council, while voters opted for some change on Walnutport Borough Council and on Northern Lehigh School Board.In Washington Township, Supervisor Josh B. Friebolin was returned to office.Meanwhile, Republican William A. Stein won Slatington's tax collector race.Slatington BoroughThe incumbents won re-election in the mayor's office and for four-year terms on the borough council in Slatington yesterday.Mayor Niedermeyer won over Ricky A. Blose, no affiliation, for the position. Niedermeyer, a Republican, received 241 votes while Blose, no affiliation, followed with 124.The winners in the council race were Republicans Daniel L. Stevens, Jon W. Rinker and Bryon C. Reed.Stevens was the top vote-getter with 268 votes, followed by Rinker with 265, and Reed, 251.Meanwhile, Stein, who faced no opposition, earned 335 votes to win another four-year term as the borough's tax collector.Walnutport BoroughWeidner, a Democrat, will be the town's new mayor in 2014. He was unopposed, and collected 113 votes in yesterday's municipal balloting. He replaces Henry Kline, who is retiring at the end of the year.Winners of the four four-year terms on council were Republicans William J. Turk, Joan Rehrig, Harold C. Greene, and Patrice D. Hunsicker.Turk was the top vote-getter with 134 votes, followed by Rehrig with 126, Greene, 124, and Hunsicker, 118. Turk, Rehrig, and Greene are incumbents, while Hunsicker is a newcomer.Losing out in the council race was Democrat David Stankovic, who gained 96 votes.Hunsicker garnered 107 votes to defeat Democrat Laura J. Stauffer, who gained just 77 votes in her bid for re-election.Meanwhile, Robert A. Treskot, a Republican, who ran unopposed, received 160 votes to win another four-year term as the borough's tax collector.Washington TownshipSupervisor Friebolin withstood a challenge by newcomer Michael P. Yesik to win re-election to another six-year term on the board.Friebolin, a Democrat, received 936 votes while Republican Yesik trailed with 696 votes.Meanwhile, Republican Sally A. Mantz, who ran unopposed, received 1,360 votes to win another four-year term as the township's tax collector, while Republican Arthur L. Kistler, who also ran unopposed, earned 1,122 votes to win a six-year term on the township's board of auditors.NLSD boardVoters in the Northern Lehigh School District selected four out of five candidates for four-year terms on the school board yesterday.Three of the candidates, incumbents Gregory S. Williams, Gary S. Fedorcha, and Natalie J. Green, appeared on both ballots.In Lehigh County, Williams received 1,391 votes, Green, 1,357, and Fedorcha, 1,346.For the fourth position, newcomer Robert J. Keegan Jr., defeated incumbent Lauren A. Ganser.Keegan, a Republican, won 1,212 votes, to defeat Ganser, a Democrat, who trailed with 858 votes.In Northampton County, Green was the top vote-getter with 158 votes, followed by Williams, 156, Fedorcha, 151, and Keegan, 107. Ganser again trailed with 65.The district includes the boroughs of Slatington, located in Lehigh County, and Walnutport, located in Northampton County, and Washington Township, located in Lehigh County.
