Holiday help

The Tamaqua Salvation Army will be accepting registrations for families in need of a little holiday help this year. This includes holiday food baskets, Toys for Tots and an Angel Tree.Dates will be Nov. 4, 5 and 6 only, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A make-up date is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 6.Proper identification and proof of need are required. Registrants MUST provide proof of residence, such as a utility bill; Social Security cards for every household member; proof of all household income, including employment/wages, public assistance, food stamps, Social Security/SSI, and any other type of income; official birth certificates for anyone under the age of 12; expenses, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, food, medical, etc.; and a working phone number.Kick off for the annual Christmas Kettle will be Nov. 16, at 10 a.m., at Depot Square Park. Volunteer ringers are needed for the seasonal campaign. An informational meeting for volunteers will be held at 5 p.m. on Nov. 7.The Angel Tree Program will begin Nov. 13. Angel Tree tags include the name, age, gender, clothing sizes and special Christmas needs and wishes of a child.Thanksgiving food baskets will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 19. A free Thanksgiving dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 28.Christmas food baskets and toy distribution will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 20.For more information, on any Salvation Army program, call 570-668-0410.Older and bolderThe Tamaqua Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group has a number of activities planned for November. October will end with a Halloween celebration on Oct. 30, complete with a pot luck luncheon.Upcoming activities will include: Nov. 13, discuss new health care rules with Tina Burns; Nov. 18, cookie exchange drop off from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Nov. 20, Thanksgiving/Christmas party, last regular session until spring of 2014.The Older and Bolder group's regular sessions are held from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays. The regular meetings include a light lunch.Art showThe Tamaqua Community Art Center will host a reception on Nov. 7 to highlight the work of West Penn Township artist William Heffner. The meet and greet session will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at 125 Pine St.The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.Zion LutheranZion Evangelical Lutheran Church is offering a Saturday worship service. The contemporary style service will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the church social hall. Featured soloist will be Susan Featro.Sunday worship services are held at 9:30 a.m.
