Penn State Nittany Lines

The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is entering into their second bye week of the season with a record of 4-2, which once again has to be viewed as a very admirable effort.

Their four wins have come against Syracuse, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, and Michigan. Their two losses have come against Central Florida (4-1) and Indiana (3-3).UCF has shown this season that they can play with anyone with their lone loss coming to No. 12 ranked South Carolina (28-25). As far as Indiana goes, I think most Penn State faithful wish they could get that one back, but the truth of the matter is Indiana just wasn't a good match-up for PSU.The Hoosiers average over 40 points per game and run a lot of offensive plays. They're definitely high octane and with Penn State's depth problems on defense it proved too much for them to overcome.Last week's four overtime victory could be a point where people look back and say this is the game that changed Penn State's season. Also, there's no better way to enter a bye week before a big match-up with Ohio State (6-0) than with a win over the Wolverines. We will get more into Penn State's match-up with Ohio State in next week's edition of Nittany Lines, so this week I'd like to update the PSU fans on some recruiting news.On Thursday, Penn State landed four-star tight end prospect Mike Gesicki from New Jersey. The verbal commitment from Gesicki is proof that the NCAA decision to lessen the sanctions is definitely making an impact on recruits.Gesicki also gives true freshman Christian Hackenberg another weapon on offense and it give the Nittany Lions another stud tight end. Add Gesicki to current PSU tight ends Kyle Carter, Jesse James, and Adam Breneman and "Hack" should be licking his chops. Now, lets take a look at some of Penn State's top 2014 commitments and see how they're doing in their senior seasons.Quarterback - Michael O'Connor (****), IMG Academy, FLThe six foot five inch quarterback who is coached by former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke at IMG Academy in Florida is a legit prospect. He's big, he's got a great arm and he can move very well for his size. Currently O'Connor has led the IMG Academy Ascenders to an undefeated record, which in Florida high school football is pretty impressive.Wide Receiver - De'Andre Thompkins (****), Swansboro, NCThompkins may not be big in size weighing in at 173 pounds and measuring just 5-11, but his speed (4.4 40 time) more than makes up for it. He's also has a solid senior season for Swansboro High in North Carolina, tallying 725 total yards and eight touchdowns on the season.Wider Receiver - Chris Godwin (****), Middletown, DEGodwin is your more prototypical wideout at 6-2, 202 pounds. According to Rivals he is the 22nd rank receiver in the country. He also has nice speed, running a 4.5 40-yard dash. Godwin has helped Middletown High School in Delaware to an undefeated season up to this point. He's also the number one ranked player in Delaware according to Rivals as well.Wider Receiver - Troy Apke (***), Mt. Lebanon, PAApke also has nice size at 6-2 190 and is the 66th ranked receiver in the country according to Rivals. With Thompkins, Godwin, and Apke the Nittany Lions have put together one of the best receiving classes in the country. Apke has a nice senior season going as he has caught 30 balls for 519 yards and seven touchdowns.Defensive Back - Troy Vincent (***), Gilman School, MDIf the name Troy Vincent sounds familiar that's because it is. Troy Vincent Jr. is the son of Troy Vincent Sr. who played multiple seasons at cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Vincent Jr. is ranked as the 31st defensive back in the nation according to Rivals and has helped the Gilman School to a 4-2 record.Defensive Back - DaQuan Worley (***), Coatesville, PAAlthough Worley has been recruited as a defensive back he has certainly made a mark in the running game this season. His 839 rushing yards at over nine yards a carry has helped Coatesville to a 7-0 record. He has also scored nine touchdowns on the year. According to Rivals he's the 44th best defensive back in the country. It looks like all of the Nittany Lions top prospects have been performing well in their senior seasons. The key as always is for them to stay healthy.Don't forget to pick up a TIMES NEWS next week as we will breakdown Penn State's crucial BIG 10 match-up with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
