Weissport Borough workers have some maintenance work to do if they want to see the town remain safe in the event of a flood.

On Monday night Sue Pywar, vice president of council, asked Attorney Michael Greek, borough solicitor, to look over a report that came with photographs from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.The report stated that the town's flood levee inspection received minimal acceptance because of several areas of non compliance.Greek said, "The ponding area needs to be cleared, plus the flap gate is rusty and sticks in the open position, two drain inlets and outlets are clogged and the drain lines show corrosion." He also read from the report that vegetation needs to be cut."These issues are not that serious," said Greek.However, if the maintenance issues are not completed, the levee could go into non compliance and that could mean that the residents of Weissport will lose their flood insurance."Failure to address your project will deny your borough emergency funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency," noted the accompanying letter from DEP.Arland Moyer, council member, also noted that Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is planning to begin the McCall bridge rehabilitation project.Moyer said that the project involves rehabilitation of the 16 space multi-steel bridge which was constructed in 1966.Improvements to the bridge were done in 1981.The bridge takes traffic over the Lehigh River, Lehigh Canal and Weissport and Lehighton boroughs.This first phase of the project will include a short term, one-way detour with a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Route 209 and Bridge Street, which is in the area of Dunkin.Beginning in 2014, the decking will be rehabilitated and repaired with a latex modified concrete overlay, replacement of all deck joints and a new approach slab at each entrance.It also includes removing and replacing pier four and other miscellaneous construction.The detour that will reroute traffic through Weissport is scheduled from June 6 to Sept. 5.
