Carbon County receives $33K grant for recycling

Carbon County will receive a nearly $33,000 state grant for last year's recycling program.

The county commissioners said the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has awarded the county $32,926.74 from the grant, which provides 50 percent reimbursement for the recycling administrative costs.Carbon County abolished the Blue Bin Recycling program and closed its Department of Solid Waste earlier this year because of a major drop in revenues coming into the program over the last few years, as well as state and federal cutbacks. These factors, as well as aging equipment that needed to be replaced, were all reasons the commissioners decided that it would be best to get out of the recycling business.Since then, the county Office of Planning and Development has been handling all administrative reporting that needs to be provided to the state regarding recycling in the county. In other matters, the commissioners addressed or acted on the following items:• The Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission is reviewing the sale of Stone Ridge Manor Water System, owned by Tri Valley Water Supply Inc., to Bowmanstown Water Authority at a cost of $175,000.The 52 water service customers, located in Lower Towamensing Township, served by Stone Ridge Manor, will now be serviced by the water authority.• Approved a memorandum of understanding "Blanket" Host Agency agreement with Pathstone Corporation for the senior community service employment program for placement of on the job training participants at various county sites. The term of the agreement is July 1 through June 30, 2014 and will automatically renew for a period of two years.• Accepted the resignations of Karen S. Christman of Palmerton and Melissa E. Taylor of Jim Thorpe, effective Oct. 11. Christman served as the human resources generalist and Taylor served as a part-time legal secretary.• Accepted the changes of status for Karen L. Rayno of Weatherly from district justice secretary II to district justice office supervisor I, retroactive to Sept. 23; Kimberly J. Butala of Weatherly from district justice secretary I to district justice secretary II, retroactive to Sept. 23; and Janelle M.
