The No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum in Lansford has announced a special tribute to the American Civil War to take place over Labor Day.

The No. 9 will celebrate Labor Day weekend with a living history Civil War Encampment, coal mine and museum tours, and the old fashioned Miners Picnic and music.The living history Civil War encampment will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 to 5 on Sunday. Coal Mine and Museum tours will be available each day from 10 to 3.The annual Old Fashioned Miners Picnic and music will be held on Sunday only from 11 to 5. Parking and admission to the grounds is free.The living history Civil War encampment commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War this year. Reenactors from the 8th Georgia Infantry Co. A, Rome Light Guards, will be camped out for the weekend. Visitors will learn what life was like for soldiers during the battle, see what a typical camp looked like, what kind of dress they wore, and the struggles they faced. The encampment will include gun firing demonstrations, an old-time wash display, and other facets of a key period in American history. Civil War candles and other war related items will be featured.Each day, visitors can also tour the historic No. 9 Coal Mine, opened in 1855, and experience what it was like to work underground in a coal mine. Visitors will ride the train 1600 feet inside the mountain and then begin a walking tour to see many of the unique features of the mine including the elevator shaft, the go-devil machine, the muleways, second escapeway, the mine hospital, the cave in site, and fossils. Back on the surface, visitors are invited to browse the vast exhibits featured inside the No. 9 Mining Museum, one of the largest in the region.On Sunday only, the old fashioned Miners Picnic will be featured. The one-day event features homemade ethnic foods including halupki, halushki, pierogies, bean soup, barbecue, kraut dogs, chili dogs, homemade desserts and beverages. Visitors can eat in the picnic pavilion and take-outs are available. Entertainment will be provided at the picnic by DJ Shawn Frederickson and family.The No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum is located at 9 Dock Street in Lansford, 15 minutes from Jim Thorpe or Tamaqua off US209.
