Board OKs new hot water boiler for prison, new roof for 911 center

Purchasing of a hot water boiler for the Schuylkill County Prison and seeking bids for a replacement of the roof on the 911 building were approved by the Schuylkill County Commissioners at their work session Wednesday at the courthouse in Pottsville.

A new gas fired domestic hot water steel tube boiler will be purchased from Antz Energy Systems, Shenandoah, for $19,100. Bids for the roof replacement will be opened at the commissioners' work session scheduled for Sept. 18. Bids will be accepted by controller Christy Joy at the courthouse up to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16.A resolution was adopted to loan $400,000 to the Schuylkill Airport Authority to serve as the local required match to the commonwealth's Block Grant for the airport's proposed new hangar construction project to house large planes.Currently the airport rents parking space to 32 planes. According to William Williard, airport manager, the airport is a very busy place and takes in more than $2,000 daily in fuel sales. A number of commercial and industrial businesses in the county receive shipments of goods and products, which arrive at the airport and are then transported to the business sites.Other businessAt the request of John Richmond, head of the adult probation department, the commissioners approved renewal of the service agreement with Alere Toxicology to continue to provide the adult probation department with drug testing supplies, laboratory shipment forms, testing supplies, laboratory testing, and test confirmations.Permission was granted for two 911 dispatchers, Gary Perna and Cynthia Shpakovsky, to attend the Mandatory Emergency Medical Dispatch training in Cecil County, Elkton, Md. The training is needed to receive certification as a telecommunicator.The board reviewed a proposal from Children and Youth Service Agency to hire Stephanie Rice, Orwigsburg, as a caseworker.Rest Haven Home seeks the transfer of two workers, Brandi Michael, Port Carbon, and Nicole Bernotas, Shenandoah, from part-time to full-time nurse's aides. Action will be taken on the proposals at the public meeting to be held next Wednesday.The commissioners were also informed the county court seeks to promote Nanertte Ketrick, Orwigsburg, court reporter, to acting chief court reporter.The Children and Youth Services reported Amanda Aungst, Palo Alto, was resigning as a caseworker and the county prison announced the resignation of James Bruce, Shamokin, who held the position as lieutenant on the correctional officers staff.At the work session of the salary board a request was reviewed from the adult probation department to create two probation officer positions, which would bring the total number to 27, and two probation officer aides. Action will be taken at the salary board public meeting next Wednesday.Prison boardThe Schuylkill County Prison Board held a brief special meeting Wednesday morning at the courthouse and took action to recommend the county commissioners accept the proposal of promoting two current correctional officers to the rank of lieutenant to fill vacancies.
