School packets

Hess Windows and Doors, 56 Mauch Chunk St., will be providing area students with a free packet of school supplies, beginning Aug. 13.Students in kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible to receive a free packet, which will include pencils, notebooks, crayons, tissues, hand sanitizer and glue sticks, as well as several other items. Students must be accompanied by an adult and there is a limit of one packet per child.Just stop by Hess Windows, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, while supplies last.Sorority newsOfficers of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met at the home of President Wanda Keefer to discuss plans for the upcoming year. In addition to setting the calendar, members were assigned to individual committees.A Summer mewing will be held at 6 p.m., Aug. 14, at the Waffle House at Heisler's Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley. Members are reminded to bring their profile pages, even if there have been no changes since last year. Reservations will be accepted for the Beginning Day event, which will be held at 2 p.m., Aug. 24, at Lake Hauto. Members will bring covered dishes to share and their own beverages for this family picnic.The first regular meeting will be held on Sept. 11 with Sue Hummel serving as hostess.Cross CountryThe Tamaqua Cross Country teams will begin gearing up for the season on Aug. 12. A morning practice will be held at 9 a.m. for runners in grades 9-12. The evening practice, at 6 p.m., will be for students in grades 7-12.The teams will meet at the front steps of the Tamaqua Area Senior High School.High school orientationTamaqua Senior High School Principal Stephen Toth has announced the date for orientation for incoming freshmen and new students.Orientation will be held Aug. 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m., in the school district auditorium.
