Crash in Belize claims Slatington woman's life

A Slatington woman was one of three foreign students studying in Belize who died in a taxi accident last week. The accident occurred as the three were being transported to the airport to return to their home countries.

According to the Amandala, Belize's local newspaper, the crash between a passenger bus and the taxi transporting Molly Hude, 24, of Slatington; Ioanna Thomopoulou, 25, of Greece; and Angela Bugeja, 24, of Malta; occurred at 10:30 a.m., July 2 on the Floral Park Bridge along the George Price Highway. The women, who arrived in Belize on June 4, had just completed their master's research with the Belize Valley Archaeology Project at the Cahal Pech site and were on their way to the Philip Goldson International Airport.Reports state that the passenger bus involved in the crash was traveling down a hill toward the bridge as the taxi transporting the woman was traveling toward the bus. It appeared the taxicab driver attempted to maneuver through a curve too quickly, but failed and drifted into the opposing traffic's lane before slamming into the front of the bus.Thomopoulou, Bugeja and the taxicab driver, Eliseo Chan, were pronounced dead at the scene. Hude passed away while being transported to the Belmopan Hospital.Hude, who was working on her master's degree in archaeology and anthropology at Athens University of Economics and Business, was the daughter of Walter A. Rex and Yvonne (Kornafel) Hude; and the fiancée of Michael Kislow of Northampton. She was a 2007 graduate of Northern Lehigh High School; and a 2011 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a bachelor of science degree in archaeology and anthropology.Hude had participated in several digs in Belize during her college career, being named a supervisor of a new dig in 2010. She also assisted with a dig in Morocco that was featured by National Geographic.
