It's the time of year when summer basketball camps are all the rage.

Participation in the summertime activity is all but a sure thing for Palmerton High School boys and girls basketball teams, which have Rentschler Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram, of Slatington, to thank for it.The dealership recently presented a check to the Palmerton High School Basketball Parents' Club in the amount of $2,720, which was raised during a Free Test Drive and Antique Car Show held in May at Leon George Bus Company in Palmerton.Jim Nemeth, president of the PAHS Basketball Parents' Club, said Rentschler's donation will go a long way in helping the program."It's a good way to start the summer season," Nemeth said. "We're very appreciative."John Kleintop, general manager, Rentschler Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge-Ram, said the dealership is thankful for the exposure it receives for participating in the event."We like the opportunity to get our product out on the marketplace so that people can experience without the fear of feeling pressure," Kleintop said. "This gives us those opportunities."As part of that event, the dealership provided new vehicles to test drive. In turn, Dodge donated $20 to Palmerton basketball for every person who took a brief free test drive and completed a short survey.Dodge has a program that combines support for high school enrichment programs with exposure for the new Dodge Durango, Journey, and Grand Caravan. The local Dodge dealer recommended the school.Nemeth also thanked Kerry Paules from Palmerton Subway, who donated hoagies for people after they took the test drive, Leon George, for use of his facility, and those who participated in the car show.Since 1993, when Chrysler introduced Drive for the Kids, Chrysler dealers have worked with parents and educators in communities across the nation. Chrysler has contributed over $4.5 million, directly to local schools, for student needs from playgrounds and field trips, to reading programs and computers.
