Special school board election set for July 23 in two counties

Election director Frannie Brennan, of Schuylkill County, with her counterpart from Carbon County, Lisa Dart, met Tuesday in Hazleton with election officials of Luzerne County and a plan was worked out to hold a special election for school director for the Hazleton Area School District on Tuesday, July 23, in Schuylkill and Carbon counties only.

The election will be restricted only to the voters who cast their ballot for school director at the last May 21 primaries. Also the election will be restricted in Schuylkill County to the five precincts in the northeast corner of the county which are part of the Hazleton Area School District. They are East Union Township, North Union Township, Kline Township and McAdoo Borough. In Carbon the districts involved are Banks Township and Beaver Meadows borough. The polling places in these five precincts will be manned by their regular polling staffs and the voting places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a deadline set for those who will be away on the voting day or are ill and incapable of coming to the polling places to obtain absentee ballots.Luzerne County wanted to have all those who had voted at the May Primary Election to vote by absentee ballot, but that was overruled at the meeting. It will be a regular election day for this special occasion with those who had voted invited to return to vote again. Each precinct will have a list of the voters who obtained ballots to vote in the May election. The special election was brought about because Luzerne County Election Bureau failed to notify Schuylkill and Carbon bureaus to remove the name of Steve Hahn from the ballot, after he withdrew from the race. Luzerne removed his name from its ballots so there is no need for a special election in that county. The Schuylkill County commissioners, at their work session this morning, approved the plan for the special election.Carbon County commissioners do not meet this week due to the July 4 holiday falling on their regular meeting day. They are expected to act on the plan next week.
