Penny Wars: A battle against leukemia

Luca Fabricatore, a third-grader at Pleasant Valley Elementary School, attended the Pleasant Valley School District's Night of Unity. He asked his principal, Joshua Krebs, if PVE could do a fundraiser to help children with blood cancer. Val Rudawski, PVE's dean of students, and Krebs met with Luca and some teachers to decide on a fundraiser. Penny Wars was one of Luca's ideas. The school then held an assembly where Luca and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society addressed the students and the Penny Wars began. Michael Sauers' second graders entered the war by dropping in their pennies. From left are: Alex Mohammed, Kamari Smaltz, Damian Dzurella, Sydney Jeker, Feola Oluwafeola and Michael Sauers. When the Penny Wars was over, the final count was $5,505 and was presented to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The students were rewarded for all their hard work and fundraising efforts with ice pops after the assembly.
