The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met June 13 at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown, with 75 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided humorous readings. Two new members were welcomed to the group.Jacqui Patrick provided the invocation in honor of Father's Day. Reports were offered by the secretary and treasurer. The annual picnic will be held Aug. 15. Registrations will be accepted beginning June 20. A representative from the state attorney general's office will present an informational session on identity theft at 11:30 a.m. on June 27.The meeting concluded with cards and social games.The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.Tax officeThe office of Tamaqua tax collector Alan Kerr will be closed all this week. The office will reopen on June 24.Mail payments will still be accepted during this time.Wrestling goldTanner McHugh, a ninth-grade student at Tamaqua Area High School, was one of three local members of the Pennsylvania Schoolboy Wrestling Team claiming a national gold medal in Greco Roman wrestling. The team, which included members from Blue Mountain and Minersville, also took a second-place in freestyle wrestling.The competition was held in Indianapolis.Veterans helpA representative from the Disabled American Veterans will be at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St., on June 24 to offer free veterans' claim service for veterans as well as widows and dependent children of veterans. Information and assistance will be provided for service-connected disability claims, low income pension, health care claims for service-connected disabilities and low income veterans and other questions concerning veterans' benefits.The representative will also be in Tamaqua on July 8 and July 22.The DAV is committed to better lives for all veterans and their families.Zion LewistownThe Rev. James Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday. The service will include the reception of new members and a brief congregational meeting will be held following the service. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.St. Peter's UnionSunday worship services are held at 9 a.m. in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The Summer Sunday School will travel to Knoebel's Grove.Activities for next week include: Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m.; Saturday, old fashioned picnic will be held from noon to 8 p.m.
