It was an exciting weekend at the June Weatherly Hill Climb as George Bowland from North Carolina won the event with a time of 47.72 seconds.

The standing Weatherly Hill Climb record of 47.17 seconds was set by Bowland in June of 2012.Eighty-four cars from throughout the country competed on the course during the two day event which was sponsored by Fairway Subaru of Hazleton along with co-sponsors DeAngelo Brothers Inc. of Hazleton, the Hazleton Firestone Store, and others.The cars entered in the competition were divided into a variety of classes determined by a car's performance potential.Each driver attempted to finish the 1.1 mile course in under 60 seconds while climbing through an elevation change of about 340 feet.The hill consists of uphill straights leading into hairpin turns, including an extremely sharp one called "the Wall," followed by a hairpin turn, a short run to another hard right hand turn and then the "Jump" where most cars leave contact with the pavement.From this point the rest of the hill consists of a short straight leading to a long sweeping turn to the finish that tests the tires grip on the road as well as the driver's nerve.During the hill climb, games, food, and refreshments by local non-profit groups and churches were available to the public.Record-holder Bowland commended the event saying, "This is a great hill and a great community. The organization is amazing."President of the Weatherly Hill Climb Association Joe Cyburt said, "We were really pleased with the turnout of people. We had good crowds, and the support from the local businesses is fantastic.""There was a lot going on here, its not just racing," he aded. "It was a successful weekend with a lot going on in the community."The Weatherly Hill Climb will be run again later this year on September 14 and 15.
