Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club held its May meeting in the social hall of Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. The business session was conducted by Vice President Kathy McGee.The group discussed the 2013 Schuylkill County Fair, which will be held July 29 through Aug. 3. Members were encouraged to enter as many categories as possible. The program was presented by Ruth Gaston of Orwigsburg. Using a family-owned Bible from the early 1900s for research, she spoke of the many current day flowers, grains and plants that can be found in the Bible. Some of the most common still known and used today include rock rose, grapevine, flax, cattails, henbane, rue, water lily, rose of sharon, wheat, rye, barley and saffron. They were used as food and for medicinal purposes, as they are today.Gaston then created a flower arrangement using flowers of the Bible, explaining each as she placed it in the arrangement. She provided members with written information and pictures, as well as quilt patterns, using Bible flowers.Arrangement winners were Evelyn Adams, first place; and Evelyn Berger, second place. Linda Leiby placed first in the specimen category. Refreshments were served by Kathy McGee and Louise Flexer. The June meeting will be held at the home of Evelyn Adams and will include a garden tour and dessert. For information about the club, (570) 668-4288.Market vouchersThe 2013 Senior Farm Market Nutrition Program, which provides older adults with vouchers for use at farm markets, will begin distributing the vouchers in June.In Tamaqua, vouchers will be distributed June 18 at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W.
