A Carbon County man was jailed this week on charges he failed to register as a sexual offender as required under Megan's Law.

Nesquehoning police identified the suspect as Brian Karlick, 26, of 134 W. Railroad St., Nesquehoning.According to police they first became aware of Karlick being a sexual offender when they received a complaint from a borough resident that his daughter had been the victim of an attempted sexual assault. That complaint was received on Wednesday, May 15, by Chief Sean Smith and Officer Steven Homanko.Police spoke with the victim and her father and learned the attempted assault occurred at a residence along W. Railroad St., and that the girl knew the suspect as "Brian." The investigation led to officers identifying Karlick as the person involved.A criminal check revealed Karlick had a warrant for his arrest issued out of Middlesex County, N.J., for a probation violation. The warrant was for failure to register as a sexual offender in Middlesex. Karlick was charged in New Jersey and pleaded guilty to criminal sexual contact on March 1, 2004, was placed on probation for a year and ordered to register under Megan's Law.Through the course of the investigation police also learned that Karlick had registered his address with New Jersey officials as 64 Sycamore St., Carteret, N.J. Police also learned that Karlick has been living at the Nesquehoning address since October 2012.On Thursday, May 16, Smith interviewed Karlick and he admitted that he was a convicted sexual offender and that he did register at an address in New Jersey but has been living in Nesquehoning since October 2012 and never registered with state police as required under Pennsylvania law.He was placed under arrest and charged with failure to comply with registration requirements. He was arraigned before District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek, of Lansford, and committed to the county prison after failing to post $50,000 cash bail.
