Sac and Fox comment on Thorpe decision

JIM THORPE, Pa. (AP) - The Sac and Fox Nation says it's not surprised by the decision by the Jim Thorpe Borough Council in eastern Pennsylvania to appeal a federal judge's order to relinquish the famed athlete's remains so they can be reinterred on American Indian land in Oklahoma.

The nation's historic preservation officer, Sandra Massey, said Friday that turning over Thorpe's body would be cheaper and easier than borough officials might think.Massey says it would be eligible for a repatriation grant, and costly archaeological and scientific work isn't necessary.A federal judge last month ruled in favor of Thorpe's sons, saying the borough amounts to a museum under the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.The borough argues it's not a federally funded museum, although it gets federal grants.Information from: WFMZ-TV,
