The Tamaqua Area School District has filed a petition in Schuylkill County court to enter a judgment against BET Lehigh Real Estate, LLC, of Horsham, for allegedly failing to pay back school taxes amounting to $80,000 on coal land properties it owns located within the boundary of the school district.

BET Lehigh acquired the properties, formerly owned by Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company, whose offices are on Panther Drive in Coaldale. LCN filed for bankruptcy and sold the vast amount of coal lands located in Tamaqua and Coaldale boroughs and Rush Township in Schuylkill County and Lansford, Nesquehoning, and Summit Hill in Carbon County for $11 million.It owns 43 tracts in Schuylkill County but only 24 tracts are within the school district boundaries with 19 remaining tracts in Schuylkill County located in Coaldale, which is in the Panther Valley School District in Carbon County.
