Girl Scouts celebrate Earth Day

While most other kids their age were sleeping in or watching cartoons on a recent Saturday morning, some local Girl Scouts were up early and working hard to help keep Nesquehoning beautiful.

In honor of Earth Day, girls from Service Unit 310 (which encompasses the Tamaqua and Panther Valley areas) donned their work gloves, grabbed some rakes, brooms and shovels and proceeded to clean up the various parks in Nesquehoning.Prior to their clean-up efforts, the Daisy, Brownie, Cadet and Junior Scouts made bird feeders from pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed that were later hung in the parks. They also engaged in a flag-raising ceremony in front of the Nesquehoning Recreation center. As a reward for their efforts, the Scouts were treated to lunch, sponsored by McDonalds and Nesquehoning Mayor Tony Walck. The girls plan to return to the parks in the near future to paint the playground equipment.
