Weatherwood: Both patients suffered from dementia

Both the elderly woman who died after being pushed on April 20 at the Weatherwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and the person who pushed her, suffered from dementia, according to a prepared statement released Thursday by administrator Karen Nocilla.

"We are deeply saddened at the loss of one of our residents and express our condolences to her family. On Saturday, April 20, an elderly female resident at Weatherwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center fell and hit her head after being pushed by another resident. Both residents suffered from dementia. First responders were called to the scene immediately and they transported the resident to Hazelton General Hospital for evaluation. Unfortunately, she passed away the following day, April 21."Behaviors associated with dementia can be unpredictable. While we strive to ensure resident care and safety on a daily basis, spontaneous, unpreventable incidents can occur due to the disease process. For that reason, we work with an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals and the residents' physicians to ensure the best quality of care and quality of life for individuals who are living with this terrible disease," Nocilla wrote.Weatherly police and Carbon County District Attorney Gary Dobias are investigating the incident. Weatherly Sgt. Michael Bogart early Thursday said he could not release further details of the case because it is still an open investigation. Later in the day, Dobias said he and police are waiting for the autopsy report and other information before making the decision as to whether charges would be filed.
