Veterans help

A representative from the Disabled American Veterans will be available once a month at Tamaqua Borough Hall to offer free veterans claim service for veterans as well as widows and dependent children of veterans. Information and assistance will be provided for service connected disability claims, low income pension, health care claims for service connected disabilities and low income veterans and other questions concerning veterans' benefits.The representative will be at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St., on May 13, June 10 and July 8.The DAV is committed to better lives for all veterans and their families.Arts nightThe Tamaqua Area Middle School Spring Art Show and Choral Concert will be held on May 2 in the middle school.The art show will be held from 7-7:30 p.m. in the hallway outside of the auditorium. Students from sixth, seventh and eighth grades will have their art work displayed, including paintings, 3-D interiors, murals, sketches, masks, group projects, cultural art, tiles, watercolor, fashion design, collages and more. There is no entry fee for the art show.The Spring Chorus Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the district auditorium. Performances will be offered by the Jazz Choral/Concert Choir and the Middle School Select and General Choruses.YMCA preschoolThe Tamaqua YMCA is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 school year. Classes are available for ages 3, 4 and 5.For more information, call (570) 668-2903 or stop in at the Y on East Broad Street.Day of prayerBethany Evangelical Congregational will be hosting a National Day of Prayer Event on May 2. This year's theme is "Pray For America," based on Matthew 12:21.A bill establishing the National Day of Prayer was signed in 1952 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, to be set each year by the sitting president. In 1988, the law was amended establishing the first Thursday in May for the observance.Tamaqua's event will be held at noon at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St. The public is welcome to attend.First MethodistThe Rev. James Cavallero will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in First United Methodist Church. A children's message will be presented by Marge Kropp. Children's Sunday school will meet following the children's message.
