Day of prayer

Bethany Evangelical Congregational will be hosting a National Day of Prayer Event on May 2. This year's theme is "Pray For America," based on Matthew 12:21.A bill establishing the National Day of Prayer was signed in 1952 by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, to be set each year by the sitting president. In 1988, the law was amended establishing the first Thursday in May for the observance.Tamaqua's event will be held at noon at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St. The public is welcome to attend.Rush-Ryan seniorsThe Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met April 9 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 35 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business session.Chaplain Kathleen Valentine provided the invocation and reports were offered by secretary Gloria Gerhard and treasurer Shirley Becker. Get well cards were sent to Ellie Zakrewsky, Jane Springer, Mae Schock, Manny Garcia and Jim Valentine.Members were treated to creme puffs, courtesy of Gloria Gerhard and Bill Morrison, and coffee, donated by Madeline Heffelfinger.The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, at the fire company. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.St. John UCCSunday worship services are held at 9:30 a.m. in St. John United Church of Christ. Sunday school classes begin at 11 a.m.Activities for next week will include: Monday, spiritual council meeting at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, choir will rehearse at 7:30 p.m.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship services this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will be followed by a Relay For Life fundraiser. The Sunday school class will meet at 10:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the church board will meet at 10:45 a.m., the Confirmation class will meet at 1 p.m., Daisies, Brownies and Cub Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.Activities for next week include: Wednesday, junior choir rehearses at 6 p.m., senior choir meets at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m.First MethodistThe Rev. James Cavallero will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in First United Methodist Church. A children's message will be presented by Marge Kropp. Children's Sunday school will meet following the children's message. Adult Sunday school meets at 9:30 a.m.Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, quilters meet at 9:30 a.m.; Wednesday, chancel choir rehearses at 7 p.m.Zion LewistownThe Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Zion's Church, Lewistown Valley. The service will include a performance by the "Unrehearsed Choir." Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.
