Pa. college seeks applicants for biology scholarships

LATROBE, PA - Saint Vincent College's Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing has announced that high school seniors may apply for 18 scholarships valued up to $40,000 each over four years.

Funded by National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S-STEM), scholarships are offered for students considering enrollment in Saint Vincent's Biology Scholars: Literature, Laboratory and Leadership Program during the next three years.Applicants must reside in select Pennsylvania counties, including Carbon, Monroe or Schuylkill; must have a high school grade point average of 3.0 or higher; and be a U.S. citizen with financial need.A scholarship award requires the student major in biology at Saint Vincent and participate in clubs, fulfill sophomore rotations, meet with career services annually and attend or present at a local, national or international research conference in junior or senior year.Interested applicants should submit the following materials in one envelope to Dr. Jennifer Koehl, Biology Department, Saint Vincent College, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650-2690: High school GPA, unofficial copy of SAT or ACT scores broken into the major divisions; class rank, if available; information on achievements attained in science, technology (computer), engineering and/or mathematics courses; letter of reference from a biology teacher that addresses the student's enthusiasm for the study of biology; information on extracurricular activities, leadership roles and community service activities; essay, using specific examples, that describes why the student is drawn to biology.Questions may be directed to Koehl at (724) 805-2357 or
