Eighteen cars of a 44-car freight train of the Central Railroad of New Jersey jumped the tracks this afternoon in Weissport, causing a massive pileup of cars and cargo. The jumble of wreckage spilled over the banks of the right of way, blocking the tow path of the Lehigh Canal, knocking over a utility pole, and felling wires. The derailment occurred under the Route 209 bridge.

One box car smashed into a concrete bridge pier and other cars piled up behind it. One of the three engines pulling the train went off the track.
