A sudden red flash of light was seen in the sky this evening by everybody who was on the street at the time in most of the area, including Mauch Chunk. It was an explosion of powder. The explosion took place at the mill of H. Dwight Laflin in the Quakake Valley, just above Hartz's. About 2,000 kegs, or over 6,000 pounds, of powder, went up in a flash. There were no workmen about, and the fact that the fire was discovered about a half hour before flames reached the kegs gave everyone time to get safely away from the blast. The flames originated in the charcoal pulverizer.
