Mahanoy City man gets state prison term for fatal drunk driving crash

Six men were sentenced on criminal charges in Schuylkill County court with two getting state sentences.

Edward Charles Boyle, 39, 315 W. Market St., Mahanoy City, who entered a guilty plea to criminal charges last Jan. 25 was sentenced by President Judge William E Baldwin.On a charge of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, he was sentenced to serve 3 1/2 to seven years in a state correctional institution, and make restitution of $35,221.18 to Sharon Donnelly, and $549 to Blue Shield. On a charge of failing to drive on roadway laned for traffic, he was fined $25, and for failure to wear a seat belt, he was fined $10 plus $100 in costs.Boyle was cited by Trooper Michael Marinchak on Sept. 16, 2011, after his vehicle was involved in an accident with a motorcycle on a curve on state road in Ryan Township. The crash caused fatal injuries to Jeffrey Allen Donnelly, a school teacher in the Mahanoy Area School District.Ted M. Vanderkarr, 41, Towanda, who entered a guilty plea last Nov. 4 to criminal charges, was sentenced by Baldwin.On charges of indecent assault, endangering welfare of a child and corruption of a minor, he was sentenced to serve a total of 30 to 60 months in a state correctional facility. He was cited by Kline Township Chief John Petrilla.Alan Robert Donmoyer, 32, of 15 Hilltop Trailer Park, Schuylkill Haven, pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated indecent assault and two counts of corruption of minor, and was sentenced by Baldwin to serve five to 10 years in a state correctional facility.On a charge of driving while his license was suspended, he was fined $500 plus $50 costs. He was cited by Hegins Township Sgt. Beau Yarmush.Martin Andrew Svrcek, 44, of 237 Wallace St., Pottsville, who pleaded guilty last Feb. 10 to driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol, was placed by Baldwin in the Intermediate Punishment Program (IPP), to serve six months on probation, pay a fine of $1,000, pay $100 to Substance Abuse Education fund, $50 to the Catastrophe fund, a $50 monthly supervision fee, attend the alcohol highway safety school, and perform 20 hours of community service.Junior Guthrie, 26, inmate at the state correctional institution near Frackville in Ryan Township, pleaded guilty to a charge of simple assault on another inmate, and was sentenced by Judge Charles M. Miller to serve one to two years, to run concurrent with the sentence he is now serving.Samuel Thomas Steffie, 41, of 600 Railroad St., Schuylkill Haven, who entered a guilty plea last Feb. 1 to a charge of criminal mischief, was sentenced by Judge James P. Goodman to serve two to 12 months in the county prison, and to make restitution of $2,300 to Peter Kadingo for damage caused to his vehicle last April 6 in Schuylkill Haven. He was cited by Patrolman William I. Horn.
