The local Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held its Secret Sister Valentine's Day party on Feb. 6 at Two Kings Pizza in Hometown. Following the opening of gifts, Service Chairperson Mary Machay offered to pick up the items needed for the chapter's Community Easter Egg Hunt. The event will be held March 23, beginning at noon, at the Bungalow Park. The hunt is open to children between the ages of 1-10.After some discussion, the ways and means committee noted a need for a fundraiser to meet this year's projected budget.The Feb. 20 meeting was held at the home of Mary Machay and a pizza sale fundraiser was approved. In honor of Presidents Day, chapter president Donna Gerber provided a quiz about former United States presidents.Patti Burke provided a program on the "8 food frauds on your shopping list."The next meeting will be held t 7 p.m., March 13, at Basile's Italian Restaurant, Hometown. The meeting will include an election of officers.DARE challengeThe DARE challenge will be held this Saturday in the Tamaqua Elementary School. Activities will begin at 10 a.m.Calvary MethodistThe Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages will be held at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.Lenten services will be held next Wednesday at Congregational Free Church, McKeansburg. The evening will begin with a song fellowship, at 7:15 p.m, with a service at 7:30 p.m.St. John UCCSunday worship services are held at 9:30 a.m. in St. John United Church of Christ. A time of food and fellowship will be held following the service. Sunday school for all ages is held at 11 a.m.Activities for next week will include: Monday, the consistory will meet at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, joint Lenten service at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ; Saturday, hoagie pick up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m..Zion LewistownThe Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. church service this Sunday in Zion's Church, Lewistown Valley. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school and the Confirmation class will meet at 9:30 a.m.Also on Sunday, the combined youth group will meet at 3 p.m.The community Lenten service will be held at 7:30 p.m., March 6, at Congregational Free Church, McKeansburg.Canned goods will be collected throughout the month of February and will then be donated to the Tamaqua Salvation Army.
